19th Century Oil Painting on Dummy Board of Angel
Rare life size 19th Century religious oil painting on carved pinewood panel of a Holy Sepulchre ‘Mourning Angel holding a Crown of Thorns’.
A large feature piece that displays very impressively as a decorative religious Dummy Board, wall mounted artwork, or architectural feature.
Nice period distressed colour and characterful face.
Alpine, probably German or Austrian.
The Easter Sepulchre is a recess or tomb in some churches where sacred elements were kept during Holy Week to commemorate the death and resurrection of Christ.
A mourning angel with a crown of thorns can represent the suffering and passion of Christ, as well as the meaning of the crown of thorns itself. According to the New Testament, a woven crown of thorns was placed on the head of Jesus during the events leading up to his crucifixion. It was one of the instruments of the Passion, employed by Christ's captors both to cause him pain and to mock his claim of authority.
Signs of age with scuffs and scratches to the wooden panels and painted surface. Structurally solid and strong. Small chipped area of wood to the top left tip.
H: 185 × W: 100 x D: 5 cm
