David Jagger Superb Oil Painting Portrait of a Boy
David Jagger (British 1891 - 1958).
Portrait of a Blonde-Haired, Blue-Eyed Boy.
Oil on panel. Image size: 51 x 41 cms (20 1/16 x 16 1/8 in).
Painted circa 1928-9.
A very fine, half-length portrait of a seated boy, completed at around the end of the 1920's by one of the most celebrated portrait painters of the 20th century.
This superb painting has been executed in oil on to panel and is a sophisticated work, demonstrating this artist's ability to paint skilfully and vigorously, wet into wet. There is a wonderful, liberal energy and spontaneity apparent in the brushstrokes - the backdrop suggestive of a heavy red curtain, the shirt deftly rendered and with a more careful and intimate examination of the hair, eyes and mouth.
The sitter looks out at us, exuding a warm and calm disposition, apparently happy to spend time being observed so closely.
Given the apparent ease, looseness and 'confident familiarity' in the way this work has been executed, it could be speculated that David Jagger knew this child well. Indeed previous criticism of the work (see below) drew certain parallels to the painting titled 'Brian' - which is, to date, the only known work Jagger created of his son as a child.
The piece is unsigned but has previously been authenticated by a leading authority on the life and work of David Jagger (again, further information below).
This is a most engaging and charming portrait that has commanded the attention and drawn favourable comments by all who have seen it. It is presented in an antique gilt frame and is available to view in person prior to purchase, should you so wish, or I am happy to arrange for secure and insured shipping, globally.
Provenance -
Bonhams Knightsbridge (Modern British & Irish Art, 17th July 2024. Lot 114). The lot received a short lot essay by Timothy Dickson:
"Throughout the 1920s and 30s Jagger was known for painting children’s portraits, many of whom were fair haired boys, and he was commissioned to produced a number of large scale child portraits for wealthy and aristocratic patrons. In the present work, there are similarities to Brian (sold in these rooms for £18,750, 22 November 2017), the hair & eye colour in particular, although here, the boy’s hairline is depicted in the opposite direction and is more likely an unknown sitter.
It is possible that the present work was commissioned by the advertising agency, J. Walter Thompson, David Jagger’s former employer during the Great War, who used it for commercial purposes in some form of advertising campaign. David Jagger’s illustrative work was incorporated in several important national advertising campaigns during the late 1920s, including Players Cigarettes, Horlicks soft drinks and Clarks Threads."
With thanks to Timothy Dickson and Bonhams for the above.
