W.Lakin Turner 1867-1936 Oil Spring Lake District
We are delighted to offer for auction this superbly executed oil on canvas by the renowned artist WILLIAM LAKIN TURNER, who has signed the painting William L. Turner in the lower left hand corner and signed it, dated it 1910 and entitled it 'Springtime, The head of Derwentwater' verso. The painting depicts a scene of Derwentwater in the Lake District, with a small group of four cattle grazing near the edge of the lake. There are blustery clouds in the sky.
WILLIAM LAKIN TURNER was born on February 27th, 1867 in Derbyshire, the son and one of four children of the well known Derbyshire artist GEORGE TURNER, whose pupil he became, along with Louis Bosworth Hurt, another well known artist. He also studied at the West London School of Art in Chelsea, where he met his future wife Lina. He painted landscapes in oil of Scotland, the Lake district and its environs and specialised in mountain and wooded scenes. WILLIAM LAKIN TURNER is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists, The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters and his works exhibited in London Exhibitions up to 1893 are listed in Graves Dictionary. His auction results frequently appear in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market and are also shown on artprice.com (129 listings), artnet.com (47), findartinfo.com (94) and arcadja.com (45) etc. There are several British galleries listing works by this artist on google at prices into the thousands of pounds.
He exhibited 14 works at the Royal Academy from 1886, 4 at the Royal Hibernian Academy, 1 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 6 at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, and 81 at the Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery. He was a Founder Member and Treasurer of the Lake Artists Society. He died in Sherborne, Dorset in 1936 and is buried there.
The painting is newly framed in a 2 5/8" beaded gilt frame as shown. It is ready to hang.
