William Rolfe & Sons Regency Square Pianoforte
William Rolfe was an innovator and maker of pianos in the late 18th century, setting up on his own in 1798 and, with his 2 sons, becoming Rolfe & Sons in the early 19th century.
This six octave square piano, stamped with serial number 6294, dates from about 1816. The quality of the construction and the Classical design features, such as the nameboard above the keyboard, which is a cartouche richly decorated with flowers, tendrils and fruits, made these pianos a favourite amongst the wealthy of that time. The mahogany case is edged with rosewood crossbanding, and has fine fruitwood and ebony stringing and banding throughout. Inside the case is pasted an instruction sheet "By Royal Patent" etc, followed by detailed information and tips for caring for the instrument. The piano has been restored, and is in working order. Circa 1816
Width: 169cm (66 1/2")
Height: 89cm (35")
Depth: 63.5cm (25")
