William Malherbe, Portrait Of A Lady, Deco, 1920s painting portrait lady %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A divine early 20th-century portrait of a lady in a blue wrap by Parisian painter, William Malherbe (1884-1951). With a variety of confident brushstrokes and a sumptuous palette, the artist has brought this beautiful Art Deco lady to life. As with many of his works, she leans forward, almost appearing to emerge into the room.

Malherbe had an interesting and distinguished career, spent between Paris and Vermont. As a young man, his first major commission came in the form of patriotic posters to support the French cause in the First World War.

But around the same time, he was also developing an exciting reputation for his post-impressionistic depictions of glamorous women. Many were comparing his style to Renoir’s later works and his popularity led to exhibitions at the Salon d’Automne and the renowned Galerie Durand-Ruel.

In 1939, he left France for Thetford, Vermont, where he stayed for the next nine years before returning to Paris.

Today, his works can be found in public and private collections worldwide including the Musée de l’Art Moderne in Paris.

The painting is housed within what appears to be its original frame and it has previously appeared at Sotheby’s. Signed and dated in the upper right.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Size including frame: 35” x 31½” / 89cm x 80cm
Year of creation: c. 1924
Condition: Very good overall with no issues. Examination under UV shows no sign of restoration.
Artist’s auction highlight: £7,609 achieved at L'Huillier & Associés, France, in 2019 for ‘Le Tub’.

Terms and conditions
Please be assured that we inspect every painting, drawing or print to check for issues relating to its condition during its time here with us. When we notice a fault or potential problem, we will note this down on the item's condition report, which can be found within each listing. We take various steps to ensure that your artwork will stand the test of time but we're unable to offer any warranties or guarantees as we're just one custodian in a potentially long line of previous owners.

Our inspections include a check for any signs of woodworm, historic or otherwise, as this is not unusual in antique frames or stretchers. If we discover any small holes, we treat the wood with a solution which states that "its deep penetration ensures effective protection for many years and prevents re-infestation". With this in mind, it's very unlikely that any future issues will occur, especially given that the wood may also have been treated by previous owners. However, as mentioned above, we are unable to provide any warranties or guarantees - just be assured that we care.

Also, many of the paintings include hanging equipment, namely wire or string. Sometimes this is already present when we purchase an item so we check to see if it's been attached correctly. However, we can't test the durability of this equipment as many of the paintings are sold quickly. So please do seek any advice if you're unsure how to hang your paintings correctly, especially if they're heavy, and do check on them from time to time.

If you have any questions at all, please just ask.
