Description:
This is a fine quality antique Victorian oil painting of a Scottish highland loch and castle, by F. E. Jamieson, circa 1900, in its original gold leaf frame, in excellent original condition. The artist was famous for how he romanticised the Highlands, popularised by Queen Victoria. F. E. Jamieson sold his pictures to wealthy tourists during the Victorian and Edwardian period.

The Victorian Scottish highland loch painting depicts a derelict castle standing on top of a hill in the background. The artist has a good way of depicting the sun catching top of mountains, and showing still depth of the water, as the sun sets, with a fishing boat moored near the water’s edge. The timing of the day is emphasised by the pink on the mountains and the darkness of the foreground.

The Victorian Scottish highland loch painting has the skill to draw you in with its range of rustic colour hues and texture depicting the quintessential Scottish highland country scene, possibly painted in late summer. The Victorian oil picture is framed in its original fabulous ornate gilt frame, which is in excellent condition.

The Victorian Scottish highland loch painting would look superb in a variety of rooms, including the hallway, living room or bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is an attractive and colourful piece. So don’t miss out on your chance to own a lovely picture.

Artist Biography:
Francis E. Jamieson (born 1895 and died 1950) was an English painter who, after a holiday to the Highlands of Scotland, became obsessed with painting highland landscapes and became one of the most prolific artists of his time.

F. E. Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolour of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolours have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolours are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamieson's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of an oil. Jamieson is known to have travelled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'.

The paintings of Jamieson were so fashionable he was contracted to paint exclusively for various furniture stores painting scenes on furniture. Jamieson is believed to have painted under eleven different artist names so he could sell more of his paintings undetected by his employers. These aliases / pseudonyms include J. McGregor, Henry Stewart, Arnould Pienne, Graham Williams, Aubrey Ramus, J. H. Boel, F. Walters, Joel Owen, Henry Cooper, C. McKinley, H. James, Stanley Graham, Montgomery Ansell, H. B. Davis, Stanley Penn, A. de Perrin, C. Frater, W. Richards and Aubrey Ramus etc.

The popularity of Jamieson remains strong to this day and his canvases are in great demand.
