William Lee Hankey (1869-1952)
'Mother and Child' by William Lee Hankey, signed with monogram, watercolour on paper, size 37 x 26.5cms.
William Lee Hankey travelled to France in the early 1900s. He was strongly influenced by the work of Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884).
He concentrated on the pastoral scenes of Brittany and Normandy. Our watercolour of a mother and child was a favourite subject and one he revisited many times. He eventually joined the Etaples Art Colony in Northern France, returning to his studio there after WWI.
