This is a superb quality and very rare antique William IV double scroll end metamorphic mahogany and leather couch that converts into a bed, circa 1830, in excellent condition. At this time, England was importing the best quality mahogany from its colonies. The frame and bolster fluted legs are constructed of solid mahogany. The frame features attractive up-swept scroll end arms, which are decorated with floral carvings to the arms. The couch features a well-carved central floral pediment, flanked by a shaped rail to each corner of the couch. Equally, the couch boasts an elegant moulded frieze. Decorative sunburst carved cartouches can be seen at the top of the fluted legs. The couch stands on elegant ring turned fluted legs to the front with the original brass collars and socket castors on all four legs.
The couch has been newly upholstered in top quality full grain brown tan leather. The back of the couch boasts a deep-buttoned back. The leather frame is studded in traditional metal studs, in keeping with the original design. The couch features a webbed base, the original detachable horsehair swab cushion and two bolster cushions at each end. The settee seats 3 – 4 persons.
The couch converts into a bed by unhooking the moulded mahogany frieze from each corner below the swab cushion. By pulling a fabric tab, the hinged metamorphic wooden base extends out of the frame of the couch to produce a bed frame. There are two internal boxes near each arm that are used to store four screw-on legs. The legs attach to the underside of the bed frame. There is a separate single mattress with the bed, which can be used in conjunction with the leather swab cushion and bolster cushions to create a mattress and cushions.
This item would look great in the living room, dining room or hallway of any house where space is at a premium and an extra bed is required but you don’t have the space for it. This item would compliment any home so don't miss out your chance to own a lovely unique piece of antique furniture.
The couch features a rich mid brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
