William IV Country House Mahogany Library Armchair
The mahogany whole upholstered in olive button-back green leather, having carved scroll open arms and curved back, raised on turned tapering front and rear sabre legs.
In what we like to describe as ‘country house condition’, the chair is lovely original order making it hugely appealing. The leather is worn but appealingly so, now wonderfully supple, there is one tear to the front but it is not large nor too disconcerting. The mahogany is in good order throughout with only minor scuffs and an outstanding patina and colour. There is some slight movement in the arm joints.
The brief reign of William IV c.1835-40 was an important period of transition between the Regency and Victorian eras. Classically inspired architecture of the Regency period was still popular, but the romanticism that was to characterise the Victorian era had begun to take hold. As such the antique furniture of the William IV period is essentially a more robust and chunkier version of the furniture made in the Regency period.
A strikingly handsome chair of huge quality.
