William IV Burr Walnut Breakfront Bookcase
A stunning William IV burr walnut breakfront bookcase. Dating to circa 1830 it features a moulded square cornered cornice above three glazed doors with acanthus carved and fluted columns flanking the central door, the base section with a thumb moulded top and plain frieze above three panelled cupboard doors separated by similarly panelled wide breakfront pilasters between the doors. The centre door is also crossbanded within the panel to give the appearance of a raised shape.
With eleven original adjustable shelves to the upper section the shelves are nicely finished with a chanelled front whilst the stepped out base has a shelf to each section (one being a replacement). The upper doors are fitted with locks and come with working keys whilst the base section does not have keys but the doors are held closed by a roller ball catch.
In very good condition and recently repolished using a traditional wax polish, knob handles which were not original have been removed in the past and whilst the key to the side doors is very short could be recut, a good locksmith should be able to cut keys for the base doors too. There are some smaller marks to the edges where the locks/rollerballs touch when the doors are closed.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or for more photos.
The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately
Width - 86 ½in/7ft 2 ½in (220cm)
Depth - 21 ½in (54cm)
Height - 94 ½in/7ft 10 ½in (240cm)
The internal dimensions of the upper sections are:
Side sections - 18 ½in wide x 10 ½in deep (47cm wide x 26.5cm deep)
Centre section - 37 ⅝in wide x 11 ¾in deep (95.5cm wide x 30cm deep)
For moving this bookcase is designed to be split into three sections with the cornice lifting off, then the top section is unscrewed from the base cupboard section. These sections should all be screwed together when reassembled.
Ref: 0494 Please appreciate all our items are antique and as such may have minor scratches, marks, knocks, shrinkage splits signs of old woodworm, and minor losses to veneer, which combine with care and years of polishing to create an individual character and patina.
