We are delighted to offer for sale this quite rare and intricately detailed painting by the artist WILLIAM ARNEE FRANK, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a mountainous scene with a track leading through a gorge, with several sheep nimbly finding their way over the rocky slope to the right of the painting. The mountain side has been painted in amazing detail, a feature of works by this artist. This may well be a view of Wales.

WILLIAM ARNEE FRANK, 1808-1897 did not exhibit in London, so his biographical details are not available in our usual reference books, but he is mentioned in Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents' which we quote for you below.

'Although essentially an artist of the first half of the 19th Century, W. A. Frank was active into his eighties and was still showing work at the West of England Academy in 1891. Little is known about his early life although he did teach drawing in Clifton and published a series of lithographs of local Bristol views in 1831. His watercolour landscapes are well painted usually in strong colours which give them a distinctive appearance. The subjects are mostly views around Bristol, the Wye Valley and North Wales.'

Frank may be found at artprice.com (26 listings), findartinfo.com (13), arcadja.com (7) and artnet.com (10), where he is listed respectively as Walter Arnee Frank and William Arthur Frank, although the works shown are obviously by the same artist and indeed appear on other sites as by William Arnee Frank. In 2006, a painting of his entitled 'Figures by a Waterfall' achieved £450 at Bonhams, Bath.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/2" mottled gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
