Welsh Sycamore Love Spoon c1860 Lovespoon Treen
An absolutely outstanding mid 19thC Welsh sycamore Love Spoon of rare form in exceptional condition. Of traditional proportions with bold feminine features and flowing organically shaped symmetrical carving. The delicate bowl typical of the region in which it was purchased in West Montgomeryshire. We have had two other spoons by the same maker all attributed to c1850 - 1860. This example is unique in our opinion as the spoon houses a working Sycamore bell held in place with wire allowing it to swing freely. Whilst bells are a common symbol to be found in Welsh Love Spoons, representing the wish to be married, they usually appear as pierced silhouettes and never of three dimensional form.
Free from damage or worm with just a small hairline shrinkage mark to the bowl to mention condition does not come any better. With beautiful soft colour and patina throughout another example you will not find.
Length 20.5cm. Width 7cm. Our preferred payment method is by Bank Transfer - BACS, or we are happy to take payment by Cash or Cheque and by PayPal for smaller value items.
