Walnut Writing Desk

Circa 1875, walnut writing desk, in the manner of Christopher Dresser. The raised back incorporating a shelf with mushrabi gallery above a pair of mahogany-lined drawers, one fitted with a pen-tray and inkwell recesses, above a tooled leater wirting surface and pair of drawers, raised on turned tapering legs with pottery castors.
Size 115cm high (75cm to surface) x 61cm wide x 53cm deep.
FOOTNOTES
This is a well-conceived and finely executed desk. It has similarities with several documented pieces by Christopher Dresser. Most notable are the use of perpendicular lines, both to support the writing surface and on the front legs. Dresser incorporated mushrabi in the back of an ebonised chair made by Chubb & Son for the Art Furnishers' Alliance and chairs made by Thomas Knight of Bath in the early 1880s and retailed by Liberty.
