W. Gray 19th C. 36x24 Oil/Canvas Land's End
We are pleased to offer for auction this large and stunning oil on canvas by the artist WILLIAM GRAY, who has signed the painting W. Gray in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1897. The painting is a dramatic view of Land's End in Cornwall with the lighthouse out to sea and a fleet of fishing boats. The whole scene has a rosy glow from the rays of the sun which are reflected like a path in the water. There are seagulls wheeling around the jagged cliffs and the first/last house is just visible on top of the cliffs on the extreme right.
Unfortunately, we are unable to definitively identify which of the several William or W. Grays executed this lovely painting. It seems that the auction sites have confused them and there are insufficient signatures shown to be able to make a correct identification. Our reference books have been no help either, as the date could apply to several and, of course, there are no signatures or copies of the work to compare. If we cannot be sure which artist is the correct one, we prefer not to give information that may be misleading. We, therefore, leave it up to the buyer to do their own research and attribution.
The painting is framed in a 3 1/4" ornate, swept gilt frame and is ready to hang.
Medium Oils on canvas.
