Victorian walnut Sutherland table
This Victorian inlaid walnut Sutherland table was made circa 1870.
Sutherland antique tables are very versatile antique tables. They fold down to a very narrow table, so that it can tuck in to a wall or behind a sofa. They can be used with one flap up or fully open making it a very comfortable 4 seat table.
The table stands on carved end supports with elegant cabriole legs and castors. A turned walnut leg using castors swings out to support each leaf.
The top with its wonderful burr walnut veneer inlaid with boxwood stringing and an inlaid pattern to the centre.
We have fully restored this table and it looks as good if not better than it would have done when it was first made as now it has the gentle fading of time.
Events during 1870
General Post Office takes over the private telegraph companies
Death of Charles Dickens
The Married woman’s property act went through Parliament, Gladstone was the Prime Minister of the day, allowing wives to own their own property.
