This is a solid walnut Victorian bookcase raised upon a plinth base with two cupboard doors above. This opens to reveal a single shelf. The doors are carved and have fielded panels. It has two drawers above with walnut linings to them. The upper glazed bookcase has space for four shelves which it comes with but we have chosen to only put three in for display purposes. The shelves are all adjustable. The upper cornice is removable and has ogee and quadrant mouldings to it. The quality of this piece is superb. The drawer linings have the classic screw with cut out so the draw lining can breathe and never split, a typical trademark of the Gillows factory. It is not marked to the top of the drawer but is more than likely Gillows of Lancaster. I have priced this piece as a normal bookcase and not a Gillows piece, although I have no doubt it is a Gillows piece. c1880-1900. We are Mews Antiques based in Worcestershire, WR9 8NN.
