Victorian mahogany Wellington chest
Victorian mahogany Wellington chest
This Victorian mahogany Wellington chest was made circa 1870 and is of a superb warm mahogany colour.
It is fitted 8 graduated drawers that are locked using a key in the hinged locking bar.
These Victorian mahogany Wellington chests are so useful and can be used in many places around the home, especially as they are narrow and provide tremendous storage opportunities.
It is often said that Wellington chests (named in celebration of the Duke of Wellington and his victory at Waterloo) are pieces of campaign antique furniture. In my opinion that this highly unlikely at they have protruding tops and plinths and so wouldn’t fit easily into the packing cases. They also don’t have the protective brass corners that a normal piece of campaign antique furniture does have. Originally, they would have been used in the home or office as the original filing cabinet.
This type of chest is very difficult for us to purchase from an estate or family division as the size makes it so useful for people to use in a modern home and so rarely do we get the opportunity to buy one.
Imagine owning this example that has a glorious colour and the extra drawer (8) usually they come with 7 drawers.
Dimensions
