Victorian Mahogany Scottish Chest of Drawers
This attractive Scottish chest dates from the late nineteenth century. It is constructed from mahogany, some solid, some veneered over solid wood. The chests consists of two small drawers over three longer drawers, with a further 'secret' long drawer at the top. The chest has a column to either side of the front. The drawers retain their handles with decorative mother-of-pearl roundels in the centre. It has had strips of wood and later castors added to the bottom at some point.
Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in usuable condition, but does have some wear consistent with age and use and would benefit from some tlc. There is some scuffing and wear to the woodwork as might be expected, which is heavy in places, and the piece is overall faded. The drawer runners are worn and would benefit from some attention. There is some knocking, chipping and loss to the woodwork and veneer in places, including to the top long drawer and along the bottom edge. There is some damage and loss to the bottom long drawer front in one corner. There is some cracking and lifting to the veneer on the top and some shrinkage cracking to the sides. The chest shows some signs of later alteration - strips of wood and castors have been added to the bottom at some point. No key is present and some of the escutcheons are missing. There are some signs of old woodworm - this is not active, but has been retreated as a precaution.
