Victorian Jug with Plated Lid, Doulton Lambeth, 1874
Here we have a striking tall Victorian Jug with a hinged Silver Plated lid. The jug is in the Neo-Gothic style much beloved of the Victorians. It has a circular base from which the body tapers upwards. The body is decorated with long vertical stylised holly leaves on a brown ground separated by white beads and two horizontal bands of white rosettes. The silver plated lid has a leaf pattern engraved onto the top.
The jug is an early art ware piece made by the famous Doulton Lambeth factory and dates to 1874. The silver plated lid is by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield. Doulton had started out as a very functional pottery producing sanitary ware, drainpipes, storage bottles and the like. The arrival of George Tinworth in 1866 was the catalyst for the start of Doulton Art Ware which really came to the public's attention at the International Exhibition in South Kensington in 1871.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks. The hinges on the lid and the thumb rest are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug stands 26cm / 10.2ins high and is 13.7cm / 5.4ins in diameter across the base. It weighs 1.4kg / 49.4oz.
The underside of the base has the oval Doulton Lambeth stamp with the year 1874 at the centre. This mark was used consistently between 1872 and 1877 and sporadically thereafter until 1887. There is a scratched mark which could be EI or 13 which we haven't been able to identify and may just be a product number.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
