We have for sale a lovely decorative and very usefully sized Victorian mottled bamboo cane hall stand. This hall stand would complement virtually any sized hallway.


This attractive bamboo hall stand is of a typical mid to late Victorian “Japanese” design and constructed from very striking mottled or spotted bamboo canes giving the hall stand a lovely variegated colouration. The hall stand consists a central mirror over a wood backed woven grass mat square within a geometrically designed bamboo framework back incorporating six bamboo coat hooks and a further two iron coat hooks. This frameworked back then extends down to a lower frame forming a typical umbrella stand, the upper component of which contains a central wood backed woven grass mat glove shelf. The hall stand probably dates to somewhere around 1880.


The hall stand is 75 inches (190.5cm) high, 23 inches (58.4cm) wide and 10 inches (25.4cm) deep, and is in a good sturdy functional condition. However, there are on or two age related signs of wear: the cap at the top of the right-hand bamboo back cane is missing, there is a split in the bamboo in the left hand back cane near the lower bamboo hook, and this hook has at some point been re-fixed.

The English interest in “Japanese” bamboo antique furniture developed in around 1869 from a growing interest in Japanese styles following the regularisation of trade between Japan and the UK in the late 1860s. However, contrary to popular belief and Victorian advertising at the time the furniture wasn’t made and imported from Japan, the Japanese at the time didn’t actually make bamboo antique furniture. Instead English designers, influenced by the influx of Japanese imports, started to use Japanese themes in the design of uniquely English bamboo furniture such as antique tables, stands and hallstands. This furniture was made by a couple of hundred or more mostly London based English manufacturers, using imported Japanese materials. The earlier designs were relatively simple, but steadily the furniture became larger and more adventurous. This English “Japanese” bamboo furniture remained popular right through the late Victorian period and into the early 20th century.
