Victorian Doulton Mustard Pot with Silver Lid, 1891

This is a charming Victorian Doulton Huntsman Mustard Pot with a Sterling Silver rim and lid. The pot is shaped as a miniature jug without the lip and is decorated in Doulton Lambeth's classic Huntsman style with a two tone brown glaze and cream sprigged figures of hunting dogs, a windmill, a tree and assorted rural characters. The silver lid is hinged with a shell thumb rest.
The mustard pot was made at Doulton's famous Lambeth factory in London whilst the silver lid was made by silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd and assayed in Chester in 1891. Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd founded their firm in London's Holborn Circus in 1878 and remained in business up until the start of the Second World War.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the ceramic pot and just a truly tiny ding in the silver rim plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot stands 7cm / 2.7ins high and is 6.6cm / 2.6ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs in at 104.2g / 3.7oz.
The hallmarks on the underside of the lid are necessarily small but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter H for 1891 and the CS FS makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd. There is also a partial set on the side of the rim. The underside of the ceramic pot is stamped with Doulton Lambeth England.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
