This is a superb quality antique Scottish Victorian beech and ash spinning wheel, circa 1850. Purchased from an estate in Perthshire, Scotland, it is believed to be a crofters’ spinning wheel. The frame is constructed of beech with an ash wheel interspersed with bobbin turned spokes and two elegant finials. It features a single treadle wheel and working carding comb for combing the wool. A connecting hinged footman operates the machine. The machine is supported in the frame by two well-turned posts. This spinning wheel is in original working order.
The earliest illustrations known of spinning wheels come from Baghdad in 1237 and China in around 1270 with Europe circa 1280. There is evidence that spinning wheels had already come into use in both China and the Islamic world during the eleventh century. As far as this example is concerned, Scottish households simply depended on their spinning wheels. Sheep were grazed in the mountains, and cheese was made from their milk. Their coats were then combed and saved to spin into thread on the spinning wheel, and then wound onto cards for weaving into fabrics.
This spinning wheel features a rich warm rich brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the bedroom, living room, dining or office as a decorative piece. This item would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are an extremely functional. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
