Particularly handsomely large in scale and by quality makers S & H Jewell 29,30 & 31 Little Queen St, Holborn, London – stamped inside of the left hand top drawer.
S & H Jewell were fine cabinet makers established in 1830 and produced for the quality end of the market and sold several pieces to Standen House, the arts and crafts home in East Grinstead.
This chest from the Victorian period survives in that lovely faded wilted condition with a really good look and stance. The large 6 drawers sit on its bold bracket plinth. We are fortunate that the chest has enjoyed a life without any major work or repolishing, so we have genuine colour and condition. The top and all the drawers are inlaid with the drawers having the original swan neck handles still attached.
The drawers sit firm and are fitting well with the original handles. We do have use marks to the top and sides. One of the front bracket feet has enjoyed an old repair but it sits well and is old. The chest smells fine and is ready to place.
Looking for a country house sized chest, then this one is rather splendid and by a fine maker…

When purchasing from us we include delivery within mainland UK, excluding Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isles, in the purchase price and liaise with you to ensure delivery is as swift and as smooth as possible. Items are delivered by private courier, usually this is a one man service. If you require a two person delivery, please let us know. Smaller items are wrapped and packed (into recycled boxes where possible) and sent via a national courier service, tracking details will be provided once an item has been collected from us.

Terms and conditions

If you are not happy with an item you have 14 days to return it. This is providing that the item is returned, in the condition it left us, within 14 days. Please note that items must be wrapped and insured, with the return cost being covered by you. Once the item is back with us, having had a once over in the workshop, your refund will be issued.

On the rare occasion that an item is damaged in transit, please notify us immediately or within 48 hours and provide us with details and images so we can best remedy the situation.
