This is a very rare and unique antique colonial Victorian carved teak opium table, circa 1840 to 1860. The top consists of lovely patinated solid pieces of teak, which has then been finished with a decorative moulding to the perimeter of the tabletop. Below, there is very pretty floral carved blind fretwork to all sides of the table. The corners are supported with the original shaped metal corner straps. Below the blind fretwork is a further and final mouled edge. Finally, the table sits on four very elegant turned and fluted legs.
These types of antique tables were often referred to as opium tables because people would either recline on a bed or on a floor with them and they would require a low level table to lean on or either smoke their opium from. This table has originated from India and would have either the British military or British Raj likely used most.
This vintage coffee table is not only in excellent original condition but it is unique and quirky and it would be an ideal interior decorators item.
This item would compliment any home, especially the living room, so don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
Condition Report
This table top, the structure, the blind floral fretwork carvings and legs are all in excellent original condition and free of any ink stains or watermarks. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges and corners. The table boasts its original polish, which is why there is an excellent colour and patination to the timber. The floral carvings to the side of the table are complete. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
