Victorian Cabinet in Bog, Burr & Quarter Sawn Oak
A Victorian collectors cabinet of superb quality and Gothic style.
The two sides are panelled with bog oak accentuated with arched panels of burr oak with pierced trefoil decoration. To the back the consturuction being the opposite, the arches being the bog oak and the burr to the panels. Glazed doors and bobbin turning details to the top edge also of bog oak.
Inside can be found a single, removable shelf supported on oak, Gothic arches. Original, working lock and key and to the trefoils in the doors can be found the original fabric insert. Cleaned and waxed displaying a warm, naturally aged finish of great charm.
Quarter sawn oak describes the way of converting the tree trunk into usable planks. Cutting the log into quarters at an angle produces spectacular patterns in the grain but it is a wasteful way to convert the lumber. Burr oak is obtained from parts of the tree where multiple growths have occurred thus producing a tight grained and knotty wood. Finally bog oak are trees that have been submerged in peat bogs for possibly thousands of years. During this time the wood is preserved in the low oxygen environment, takes on a darkened colour and develops a hardened construction. All three of these timbers are rare, desirable and expensive therefore associated with quality items.
A beautiful item of cabinetry, possibly a one off and finely made in sought after timbers.
