‘The pebble in a pond table’
This Victorian burr walnut coffee table was first made circa 1860 as a loo table. Loo was a Victorian parlour game. Loo antique tables were purchased by the middle and professional classes to play the game with their family and friends. As the parlour was where these gatherings took place the owners would wish to show their success and so high quality items were often placed in the area.
This example is from the upper end of the quality scale. As the game waned these tables were needed for other uses for the modern home. There is no such item as an antique coffee table therefore there was the need for such items which meant that loo tables were reduced in height to be used for this purpose.
The oval top has an amazing grain to the top. The cabinetmaker selected this timber as it has such a stunning figuring that gives the impression of a pebble being thrown into a pond with the ripples lapping to the table tops edge. In over 40years of dealing I have never seen such timber.
The coffee table stands on the solid walnut quadruple base of cabriole legs ending with scroll toes.
