Victorian brass bound rosewood lap-desk
Here we have to offer you this Victorian brass bound lap-desk.
The rosewood box with brass inset corners and strap work.
The box folds over to reveal its writing surface and stationary sections.
The leather inset writing surface, has two lids, each one opens to reveal an open storage area. This would have been for paper and writing implements, and important documents.
In the bottom section, there is a secret compartment that springs open to reveal some sovereign and guinea drawers.
Writing boxes like this, would have been taken on journeys to use for writing letters to loved ones or business people.
It would have been an important piece of equipment to take on the long and often dangerous journeys the owner would have taken in those days.
This box has an inscription in the brass plaque in the box lid, and is dated 1846.
Presented to Mr Robt. Anderson, As a token of respect ,by his friends in the employment of Messrs Aberrcromby & co Glasgow, 14th April 1846
