Victorian 1 Pt Copper Kettle, Wm. Soutter, B'ham
This is a good quality Victorian Copper Kettle. The kettle is oval with a beaded upper rim, a brass finial and a turned wooden handle held by two brass brackets. The interior of the kettle has been tinned. In terms of shape this could be either a kettle or a teapot but there is limescale residue on the inside which shows that it has primarily been used as a kettle.
The kettle is made in Birmingham by the well known firm of William Soutter & Sons and dates to around the 1870s / 1880s. Founded in the 1860s, the firm started out making brass fittings for plumbers but by the 1870s had moved into domestic holloware, particularly kettles for which they are best known. Their factory closed in 1927.
The kettle has definitely been well used and has a few small dings in the body along with some marks, probably caused by sitting on a stove top. Although most likely to now be used as a decorative piece, it does however remain sound and could still be used for boiling water if desired. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The kettle measures 22.5cm / 8.8ins from spout to handle, 11.3cm / 4.4ins across and stands 14.3cm / 5.6ins high. It weighs in at 656g / 23.1oz and has a capacity of 4 Gills or 1 Pint / 568ml.
The underside of the base is marked with the distinctive W S & S monogram for William Soutter & Sons in use between the 1870s and 1890s (it became much simplified after this period) and the letter B for Birmingham. It also has a stamp of 4 Gill to show the capacity (4 gills = 1 pint).
