Very rare Victorian plaster portrait of Millais millais alexander munro %%alt5%%
VERY RARE mid Victorian plaster portrait (relief roundel) of JOHN EVERETT MILLAIS after ALEXANDER MUNRO. Contained within the very nice and original gilt frame with glass front.

Alexander Munro (1825 - 1871) was a portrait sculptor, he carved a marble bust of Millais around 1855. He studied sculpture in the Royal Academy Schools around 1845 - 1848, training in traditional methods which incorporated the use of plaster casts. At this time he met Gabriel Rossetti who introduced him to friends and other members of the Pre-Raphaelite orbit such as Millais.

The original carved marble bust of Millais he did now resides at the National Portrait Gallery.

This piece is in first class condition with no damage of any kind. A similar example but in what I would consider to be an inferior frame sold at Christie's London (sale 9606) in 2003 for £1998 plus commission.
