Vase by Edith Lupton for Doulton Lambeth, 1886
Here we have a beautiful Victorian vase designed by Edith D. Lupton in the Aesthetic style for Doulton Lambeth and dating to 1886. The vase is bulbous with a wide neck, somewhat reminiscent of a ginger jar. The body of the vase is decorated with a trailing vine with dark green leaves and small creamy white flowers on a beige background. The top and bottom feature a ring of rosettes in circular frames with overlaid pennants and the inside of the neck has a rich mottled brown glaze.
Edith D. Lupton worked at Doulton's Lambeth factory in London between around 1875 and 1890. She was part of the famous group of artists that included the Barlow family, Frank Butler, Mark Marshall and Eliza Simmance and collaborated with many of them. She is particularly known for her glazed designs featuring foliage and flowers.
Condition is extremely good with no chips or cracks and appears to have been kept primarily as a decorative piece rather than being often used for flowers. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase is of a good size for a bunch of flowers, standing 16.2cm / 6.4ins high and being 12cm / 4.7ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs 911g / 32.1oz.
The underside of the vase has the Doulton Lambeth mark, the date stamp for 1886, the EDL mark for Edith D. Lupton and an EW mark which is probably that of Emily Welch who assisted a number of the artists at this time.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the vase.
