Unusual Decorated Victorian Hall Table `Mr Spence`
The stained pine carcass, with unusual applied decoration and mouldings, having a gallery backed top above two frieze drawers with studded decoration of leather, embossed metal and mother of pearl buttons to read ‘Mr Spence’ to each, the shaped apron with further applied decoration and turnings over an under-tier shelf pierced with four holes and with decorated frieze, the whole standing turned front legs with hexagonal sections, and surviving in original condition from the late Victorian period.
The table is in highly original condition with bitumen patination to the entire surface which displays an awful lot of character, evocative of its life thus far. One drawer knob handle has had a section replaced and there is a degree of bowing to the under-tier shelf with two splits. She could be seen as needing to spend a little time at the restorers though we don’t feel this is overtly necessary, she stands true enough and her failings are part of her charm.
By repute this table was purchased thirty-five years ago in North Yorkshire from a traveling family. There are links stylistically to Scottish studwork of the same period and the table is folksy and naive in its execution though there is nothing for us to compare it to in terms of its design. Mr Spence was quite clearly a chap of character, whoever he was, and the table proves utterly charming in an off-key quirky way.
A very unusual table, and unique, with a distinctly bohemian tang.
