Three Large Regency Painted Cast Iron Window Boxes

The large and heavy cast iron Regency period convex fronted window boxes in several layers of mainly period black paint, each of riveted construction and with three finials to each, the backs now adapted for use for flat walls, survive from the first quarter of the nineteenth century.
The boxes are in well-aged condition with the paint now flaking commensurate with age and weathering, though the iron remaining strong in all areas and having much of the original rivets to each. To each box the rear section has been added (around 30% of the wholes) so the boxes can again be used, which was work carried out in the traditional way by our blacksmith. The paint has then been matched in to that of the other 75%. They would have originally been integral to a Regency period outer wall so when we acquired them they didn’t have any rear sections. Each box has several holes drilled ready for mounting and they prove heavy so they would need to be mounted well.
In the early 19th Century, the use of margin lights became very popular and, combined with cast-iron balconies, and boxes such as these, created a delicate and extremely elegant feature now termed “Regency”, although this style continued into the 1840’s.
Hugely versatile period adornments of good size and texture that are very hard to find and that could be used as intended or brought indoors for wonderfully original shelving.
