Thames Tunnel Souvenir mug - 1843
A Very rare & collectable 19th Century miniature pottery red transferware, souvenir mug - 25th March 1843
Staffordshire lead-glazed earthenware.
Depicting the Wapping Entrance to the Thames Tunnel in London which opened in 1843, constructed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel
These were produced in the larger size but more rarely, this miniature size.
Further to make this item all the rarer, of all the miniatures that were produced, most were blue.
As with many souvenir items, even when widely produced, few are greatly valued at the time but some 177 years later are sought after.
The Thames Tunnel, from Wapping to Rotherhithe was the first tunnel under a river anywhere in the world. It was designed by Marc Brunel (Isambard's father)
The operation was started in 1825 and was halted a number of times when the river burst in and flooded the workings
The stoppages put the scheme's finances under severe strain. At one point the operation was halted for seven years and the tunnel bricked up.
Eventually the tunnel was completed in 1843.
Tunnel, facts:
1,200 feet long
76 feet below high water mark
8 years building
Cost £446,000
Opened the 25th day of March, 1843
This little mug was a souvenir of an important event.
