Terrific Small Naive Antique Oil Painting on Panel
Offered here is a wonderful old / antique oil on panel study of a characterful (if somewhat wayward!) gentleman in the midst of consuming a bottle of wine.
Judging by his attire (a provincial shirt and apron) and what looks to be a pair of shoes hanging from the wall behind, it could be that he is a shoe repairer or cobbler (?)
A rip to the upper arm section of his shirt (revealing a cut or wound beneath), to which he glances, offers further narrative.
The quality of the painting is very good the surface is well-worked yet still retains a looseness and spontaneity. The detail around the ruddy face, neck and ripped shirt is particularly deft and well-rendered....combining nicely to suggest something of the character and 'story' behind the person depicted.
This charming and somewhat naive study is old and must date from the late 17th - 18th century. It may be allegorical in that it refers to a fable or tale, or it could be a portrait of a real person known to the artist.
Approx Dimensions (cms):
Panel size: 12.5 x 15.5.
Including frame: 18 x 20.5.
