Tapio Wirkkala "Pearl Drops" Vase, Rosenthal 1960s
A stunning white matt finish bisque vase in the "Pearl Drops" pattern designed by the great Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala for Rosenthal of Germany in the 1960s.
Rosenthal are one of the great names in German ceramics with a long history dating back to 1879. After a difficult time during the Nazi era because of the company's Jewish connections, they found a new lease of life post war and the Mid-Century Modern era is arguably their finest period of production.
Tapio Wirkkala (1915-85) is one of Finland's most celebrated designers and sculptors and worked with Rosenthal in the 1950s and 60s. He is one of the major figures of post war design. The "Pearl Drops" vase is a quintessentially Wirkkala piece.
The oval shaped vase stands 12.1cm / 4.75" high and is 6.5cm / 2.5" at its widest point. It has a wonderfully tactile feel and looks amazing in almost any setting. If you're looking for mid-century style then you need look no further.
Condition is excellent with no chips or cracks and virtually no signs of usage. This has probably spent most of its life as a decorative piece. It is stamped Rosenthal and signed by Tapio Wirkkala on the base. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
