Superb Victorian Needlework Copy of a Medieval Tap
A really wonderful Victorian needlework copy of one the famous Lady and the Unicorn Tapestries. The needlework is done in wool and silk and retains a good colour. The work is mounted in the original slip with the french inscription across the bottom. The work has been mounted in a period Victorian gilt and extensively molded frame. The needlework is in excellent condition with only some slight wear to the lower left corner. The whole is in excellent condition with the frame slightly tired and worn to be in keeping with the aesthetic of the piece. C.1860
The Lady and the Unicorn Tapestries were made in Flanders in the fifteenth century and were rediscovered in 1841, since which they have been in Cluny Museum. There are six tapestries in all, each depicting a sense, this one is known as sight, as you can see the unicorn catching it's reflection in the mirror.
