Superb Oak Library Centre Table


A superb Oak Library Centre Table in the manner of Richard Bridgens, having a beautiful highly figured Oak top with Ebony line inlay decoration. The table having a highly decorative carved frieze with a single flush drawer to each side. Raised on a spectacular turned column supports, adjoined by a carved stretcher rail, terminating in scrolled acanthus carved feet with original sunken castors. Excellent colour, condition and original finish throughout. English, Circa 1840
Richard Hicks Bridgens started his career in Liverpool where he was apprenticed and worked for the renowned cabinet maker George Bullock. In 1814 he moved to London and continued working with George Bullock. When George Bullock died in 1818, Bridgens started his own business in Birmingham from 1819 to 1825. He too produced extraordinary pieces, ahead of his time and unlike anything anyone had seen before. His most notable known work was for James Watt junior at Aston Hall designing antique furniture and making architectural alterations in the Jacobean style. When his wife inherited a sugar plantation the couple left Birmingham for Trinidad.
