Sunset Watercolour by Frederick John Bartram Hiles
This is a great original maritime signed watercolour by Frederick John Bartram Hiles (1872 – 1927) Autumn Sunset. The painting is offered in it's original plain gilt frame with ornate gilt slip frame and grey mount. There are a number of exhibition labels and a biography of the artist from the original vendor Frost and Reed. The painting is signed by the artist bottom right. The frame measures 52cm x 39cm and the painting 30cm x 17cm.
Born in Bristol, the artist lost both his arms in a tram accident. Having from childhood shown a strong disposition and love for drawing, he was taken in hand by some artist friends and taught to draw holding the pencil in his mouth. He attended art classes at the Merchant Venture’s Technical college in Bristol and later won a Scholarship to the National Art Training School at South Kensington. Here he won several prizes and subsequently visited Paris for several months to study in museums. During his time of study at South Kensington he came under the notice of Sir Morel Mackenzie, who was so delighted with his work he bought him under the notice of the Princess of Wales. Bartram Hiles had a very successful career despite his disability and exhibited at many leading London and provincial galleries. He was elected a member of the Royal west of England Academy and his work was purchased by Queen Victoria.
