Small Open Bookshelves by Jacob of Paris c.1830.

Superb quality early 19th.c. French open bookshelves or buffet stamped for the great Parisian cabinet makers Jacob c.1830. Useful small size just 36″ wide. Four solid mahogany shelves with cleated sides and moulded edges. With unusual pierced and shaped ends to stop things falling off the sides and making it suitable for use as a bookshelf. On crisply turned and reeded front column supports. Clearly stamped •Jacob on the top of both the rear stiles. Excellent condition and original colour simply cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
Following its founding in 1765 by George Jacob (1739-1814) chair maker to Louis XVI, three generations of the Jacob family grew the company through the Revolutionary and Napoleonic years to become the largest and most influential antique furniture makers and retailers in Paris. Jacob pieces can be found in the collections of several of the world great museums. This piece probably dates from the era of George Alphonse Jacob, grandson of George.
