Sir Edward John Poynter Fine Original Painting Study
Sir Edward John Poynter, B.T., P.R.A., R.W.S. (1836 - 1919).
A Fine, Original Ink Study of a Classical Battle Helmet and Trident.
A fascinating work, executed in monochrome watercolour or sepia wash, onto paper. Signed to the lower right with Poynter's 'EJP' studio stamp. This work, whilst reflective of Poynter's lifelong engagement with neoclassicism, is also a superb example of just what a skilled draftsman he was, capable of objective, observational work in exquisite detail.
It is possible this piece was preparatory study for 'St George' - a work he created for the Central Lobby of the Palace of Westminster, 1870. Other studies of armour, similar to the present example, were created at around this time. Or the work may simply have been intended as an exercise in its own right.
The painting measures 16.5 x 24.5 cms (viewable area). Overall, framed 30 x 39 cms.
There is excellent, historic 'country house' provenance attached to this piece. (Please see my other listing for an associated medal).
Poynter, an artist of true international significance and standing, was a painter, watercolorist, illustrator and designer. He is most known for his engagement with classical, historical, mythological and genre scenes as well as some stand-out Biblical works, painted on a grand scale. He was honoured throughout his career and in 1868 was elected Associate of the Royal Academy, elected Royal Academician in 1876, was made director of the National Gallery in 1894 and became President Of the Royal Academy in 1896. He received a knighthood with his Presidency and was made a Baronet in 1902.
His work is collected on an international level.
