Sheep Grazing, Robert MORSON HUGHES
Sheep Grazing
Robert Morson Hughes 1873-1953 RA,RI,ROI,NEA,International Society, Manchester City Art Gallery, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool
Oil Painting
Sheep Grazing. Oil on board. Good example of a Robert Morson Hughes (1873-1953) painting, in good condition and well framed. Provenance from Barnes Thomas of Penzance.
Born in Sussex, Bertie Hughes lived until he was 20 in Kent. "Bertie" was lined up for a career in agriculture but this held little attraction. His father commented, "If you want something without much work, you had better go in for art". Bertie, who was keen on sketching, leapt at the opportunity and studied for a session at the Lambeth School of Art, before coming under the influence of Buxton Knight. In 1905, he came to Lamorna, with Charles Crombie, the popular illustrator, and became a close friend of Lamorna Birch. They both shared a passion for fishing and shooting & Hughes features as the angler in a number of Birch's works. In 1909 while at the Forbes School he met Eleanor whom he married the following year, a year also made memorable by his first success at the RA. In 1912, he was elected to the Newlyn Society of Artists, a body with which he was to be closely associated for many years. Principally, a landscape painter in oil, he produced some evocative works, helped by lyrical titles, such as Green-Robed Senators of Mighty Woods, The Coming Gold that Melts into the Grey and The Unnumbered Smiling of the Sea. France was a favourite destination and paintings of the French Alps featured regularly in his exhibits at the RA. He joined the St Ives Society of Artists in 1933 and was a regular contributor for the rest of his life.

ITEM INFORMATION & TERMINOLOGY
Every item we sell is fully guaranteed to be as we describe. We use the same cataloguing terms as most major auction houses The cataloguing terms that we use have the following meanings
1. where the text which forms reads "'by" and is followed by the artist's full name (or the artist's initials, if his full name is unrecorded), the work is in our opinion by the artist
2. where the expression "attributed to" is used, the work is in our opinion possibly a work by the artist, in whole or in part
3. where the expression "'circle of'" is used, the work is in our opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence
4. where the expression "'follower of"' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil
5. where the expression '"manner of"' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date
6. where the term "after" is used, the work is in our opinion a copy or pastiche (of any date) of a work by the artist.
7. Where the term 'signed...' is used in our opinion the work has been signed by the artist, where the term 'with signature...' or 'bears signature...' is used in our opinion the signature is by a hand other than that of the artist.
