Sebastiaan M.S.de Ranitz Watercolour 1912 Sebastiaan Mattheus Sigismund de Ranitz 1846-1916 Dutch %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer for sale this atmospheric watercolour by the Dutch artist Sebastiaan Mattheus Sigismund de Ranitz, who has signed the painting de Ranitz in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1912. The painting depicts a wintry scene, with a cart on a snow covered track, with its two horses out of the shafts and walking up the lane. In front of them is a man carrying a pole, although it may be that one of the shafts has broken, as there is another man stooped over something on the ground in front of the cart. The sky looks full of snow and there is still snow on the branches of the trees.

Sebastiaan Mattheus Sigismund de Ranitz was born in Nijmegen on 16th May 1846. After school he entered military service, rising to a Captain in the infantry. On September 2nd, 1881 he became private secretary to King William III of the Netherlands (1881-1890, also becoming his aide (1885-1890). In 1888 he was ennobled by the King. There is a wonderful photograph of him in full uniform and regalia available of google.

After the death of the King in 1890, he became private secretary to the widowed Queen Mother and Regent Emma and was her close confidante (1890-1894). In 1894 he also became Chamberlain to Queen Wilhelmina. From 1898-1903 he was Master of the home of Queen Mother Emma and from 1903 he was Grand Master to Queen Wilhelmina.

Interestingly, there have been rumours to the effect that he was, in fact, the father of Queen Wilhelmina and this has been raised as recently as 2010.

It states in his biography on wikipedia that he also had a gift for art and there are auction records for his work, in fact a 14" x 10" watercolour achieved £598 at Christie's Amsterdam in 2002 and a snowy landscape made £342 in 2013 at another auction in the Netherlands.

The painting has been newly mounted in two tone acid free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/4" dull silver frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
