Samuel G.Prout 1822-1911 Watercolour Ratisbon
We are delighted to offer for sale this superb watercolour attributed to SAMUEL GILLESPIE PROUT, 1822-1911, attributed on the old mount and by the Auction House where we purchased it, and entitled Ratisbon Cathedral. The painting depicts an interior of the Cathedral of St. Peter at Ratisbon, also called Regensburg, in Bavaria. The Cathedral was started in either 1250,1260, or 1275, (there is some disagreement about the actual date), and completed in 1634, except for the towers, which were finished in 1869. The Cathedral is in Pure German Gothic. Interestingly, a painting of the Porch of Ratisbon Cathedral by Samuel Prout, his father, was part of a bequest to the Nation in 1955.
SAMUEL GILLESPIE PROUT, 1822-1911, the son of Samuel Prout O.W.S. 1783-1852, was primarily a philanthropist, but he was also an artist in the manner of his father. He organized food supplies to Paris after the siege of 1871, to Spain during the Civil War of 1874, and to Egypt during the famine of 1884. As an artist he was like his father not only in style, but also in his willingness to sell his work for any price offered. He lived in Devon for much of his life, first at Ilfracombe and then at Braunton. He was a friend of Ruskin and W. Hunt.
We do believe, although it is only our opinion, backed by the Auction House and the mount, that this is a work by S. G. Prout, as after doing some research, we have found another painting entitled 'Inside Abbeville Cathedral', signed by S. G. Prout, which uses the same colour palette, the stone work is executed in the same way and, indeed, looks remarkably like this painting. A photograph of this painting is available at findartinfo.com, if you are a subscriber. It was sold at Christies in Amsterdam on the 13th June, 2006 for £669.
His auction results are available at findartinfo.com, artnet.com, artprice.com and he is listed in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market, where between 2004 and 2007 his watercolours ranged from £320 - £680. Examples of his work may be found at the Victoria and Albert Museum. For information on S. G. Prout, please consult The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and British Watercolour Artists by H.L. Mallalieu.
The painting is newly framed and mounted in a 1 1/4" silver grey frame to complement and has an earlier inner mount, not the original obviously as it shows his year of death. It is ready to hang.
