Robert Coppillie Avian Watercolour Kingfisher

1 of 6
We are offering for sale this delightful, large watercolour by the artist ROBERT J. COPPILLIE, who has signed the painting to the lower right. The painting depicts a Kingfisher perched on the dead branch of a conifer, covered in lichen.
The Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), also known as the Eurasian Kingfisher and river kingfisher, is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.
This sparrow-sized bird has the typical short-tailed, large-headed kingfisher profile it has blue upperparts, orange underparts and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish, caught by diving, and has special visual adaptations to enable it to see prey under water. The glossy white eggs are laid in a nest at the end of a burrow in a riverbank.
This is the second avian watercolour by this artist that we are currently listing. Please see our stock for sale page for the other, which is of a yellow wagtail.
Robert J. Coppillie was born in Westminster, London in 1951, the son of Frederick Leonard Coppillie (1918-1987). He is a painter in watercolour and gouache and a teacher. In 1976 in Colchester he married Christine M. Vincent and moved to Ipswich, close to which he currently lives. He paints flowers, birds and wildlife in meticulous detail.
He has held teaching courses at Snape Maltings, where he exhibited. He also exhibited at the Society of Wildlife Artists and the Haste Gallery in Ipswich. He has had solo exhibitions at Harrods and several galleries in East Anglia.
The painting is newly mounted in two tone acid free mountcard to complement and is framed in a 1" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired with new brass picture, new brass hangers and will be ready to hang.
