Richard Britton Harvest Mice & Red Admiral
We are pleased to offer for sale this charming and meticulously detailed gouache/watercolour by the artist Richard Britton, who has signed the painting to the lower right and dated it '74. The painting depicts three Harvest Mice (Latin: Micromys minutus) around their nest, which is woven between some corn stalks. There is a Red Admiral butterfly behind them. Harvest Mice are the smallest British mice and are 5cm long, with a tail of 6cm and they weigh 6-7g. They build round nests of tightly woven grass between stems of plants and off the ground, as in this painting. Their habitat is grassland, reedbeds, hedgerows and edges of woodland.
This is one of a small collection of paintings by this artist that we have acquired and will be listing over the next few weeks.
Richard N. Britton was born in 1931 and has been a professional artist for over 40 years and his main subject is animal portraiture, as well as landscapes, seascapes and sculpture. He uses a full range of media. He lives in Worcestershire where he has his studio.
He spent six months in South Africa at the invitation of the Department of Nature Conservation, painting endangered wildlife, which led to many commissions to paint equestrian portraits on the Cape. He is a committed conservationist.
He has exhibited at the Society of Wildlife Artists, the Society of Equestrian Artists and is a regular exhibitor at Worcester Society of Artists.
