Rhoda Holmes Nicholls English American Watercolour Rhoda Holmes Nicholls 1854-1930 EnglishAmerican %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this beautiful portrait watercolour by the English/American artist Rhoda Holmes Nicholls. The portrait depicts a young woman with a very sweet, but possibly wistful expression on her face. She is wearing a high, starched white cap and a white high necked collar over her dress. She may be Continental, possibly Breton, from the cap. As Rhoda Holmes was married in 1884 and, subsequently, signed Rhoda Holmes Nicholls, we would date this painting prior to this date.

Rhoda Carleton Marian Holmes was born on the 28th March, 1854 in Coventry, England, the daughter of the Reverend George Holmes, who became the Vicar of Littlehampton and subsequently Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. After an education from governesses and at boarding school, she studied art at Bloomsbury School of Art (now the Royal College of Art). She won the Queen's Prize at the end of her first year, which gave her £60 annually for 3 years and an additional £10 from Queen Victoria's personal budget. However, after studying in London for a year, she decided to continue her studies in Italy, so forfeited her prize.

She studied figures with Guiseppe Camarano and landscapes with Achille Vertunni in Venice. In 1881, she met and showed her work to Queen Margherita of Italy. She was the second woman elected to the Societa degli Aquarellisti (Society of Watercolourists).

She met American artist Burr H. Nicholls during a subsequent trip to Venice and they married in 1884 in Sussex, honeymooned in Venice and moved to the USA in the spring of the same year. By 1896, the couple were living in a mansion in New York City and had 2 children, a son and a daughter. Their marriage fell apart when one of her works was accepted by the Paris Salon, but her husband's was rejected. They divorced and Burr Nicholls died in 1915.

Although she had exhibited in London at the Royal Academy prior to her marriage, in the US, she exhibited at the Society of American Artists, receiving awards, both there and in Europe. She exhibited at the Chicago World Fair, in Boston, at the American Art Association of New York, and the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915 in San Francisco etc.

Her paintings were shown at the McDowell Club. She was a Member of the Women's Art Club of New York and Vice Persident of the New York Water Colour Club, belonged to the American Society of Miniature Painters and the American Water Color Society. She was co-editor of 'Palette & Bench'.

She also taught at her studio in New York, at the Art Students League of New York, William Merritt Chase's Shinnecock School of Art on Long Island and in towns in the Eastern United States. She died on the 7th September, 1930 in Stamford, Connecticut at the age of 76.

In 1924 a major show of her watercolours was held at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. In 2006, the Williams College Museum of Art held an exhibition of 25 of her oils and watercolours.

Examples of her work are in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, High Museum of Art Altanta, Boston Art Club and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Massachusetts, and the Strong Museum, Rochester, New York.

Her biography is in the Encyclopedia Britannica, on Wikipedia and elsewhere online, as well as her self portrait and other examples of her work on google images.
