Reverse Glass Paintings, 1815 Victors of Waterloo
An original and rare pair of Regency Reverse Glass Paintings produced as a celebration of the two principal allied leaders that defeated Napoleon Bonaparte at the battle of Waterloo in 1815. These are portraits of Wellington and Blucher, each in profile Wellington looking right, Blucher looking left, within ovals augmented by flags trophies of arms, and laurels, against a backdrop of clouds. The frames are period but are also very basic, wooden with stain finish and a wooden back plate which is rough-hewn (as is typical of the period).
Size: overall frame is 27.5cm (10.75in) x 22.5cm (8.75in) the image area is 23.5cm (9.25in) x 18.5cm (7.25in).
Condition is genuinely excellent, the images are undamaged (no scratches nor losses) the colouring is aged as seen in the photos of the background clouds and the title/caption bar, the glass is free of any cracks. The frame is worn but basically sound, the back plate has new pins securing and is over taped with new backing tape (the original pins have perished, and the tape has been added to secure the plate further). Buchanan and Laing Galleries are a private client business. Appointments can be made by arrangement via email.
