This is a rare Victorian octagonal memorial plate created for the Tercentenary of the defeat of the Spanish Armada and the building of the Armada Memorial on Plymouth Hoe in 1888.

The plate has a black transfer printed design on a cream coloured ground featuring the Armada Memorial. On one side is the royal cipher for Elizabeth I, Queen in 1588, and on the other is the royal cipher for Victoria, Queen in 1888. Below the memorial are details of the shields that surround the monument, featuring the arms of the towns and cities which supplied ships, men and money to the English fleet and the arms of the families whose ancestors served under the Admiral Lord Howard. The shape of the plate reflects the octagonal base of the memorial.

The back of the plate is stamped C. Payne, Plymouth, which is almost certainly the name of the retailer who commissioned the design of the plate, most probably from a pottery in Staffordshire.

There are some patches of light staining to the plate and crackling to the glaze along with a few scuff marks around the rim but there are no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The plate is 24.2cm / 9.5ins across.
