Rare Oil Painting Of Dancer Maud Allan C1909 Oil Paintings of Maud Allen as Salome Beulah Maude Durrant Toronto Belly Dancers %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
QUALITY OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS OF DANCER MAUD ALLAN AS SHE PORTRAYS SALOME BY GIBRALTARIAN ARTIST R.TRINIDAD SIGNED & DATED C1909 24 x 20 INCHES APPROX.

The painting depicts Miss Maud Allan, the exotic dancer, portraying Salome in her production Vision of Salome, which was loosely based on Oscar Wilde's play Salome. Maud Allan was born Beulah Maude Durrant in Toronto, Canada on 27th August 1873.
She changed her name partly due to the scandal surrounding her brother, who was hanged for murdering two women. She was a pianist, dancer and choreographer and designed and sometimes sewed her own costumes.
She brought her show to London in 1908 and performed 250 performances in one year, although the City of Manchester banned the production.
She was later involved in an infamous libel case. There are many biographies and photographs of her available on the web. She died in Los Angeles in 1956.

This is a lovely detailed portrait by the artist R. Trinidad, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. Underneath the figure is inscribed 'A Study from Life of Miss Maud Allen (sic) by Norman Morrow'. In the right hand corner is written Copied by R. Trinidad Gibraltar 1909.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
R. Trinidad was a Gibraltarian artist, who painted mainly portraits. We have found 6 paintings by him on various auction sites but have no other biographical information about him. The beads of which her costume is mainly composed, have been painted like jewelled dots, which gives texture to the painting.
How he came to see the Norman Morrow picture or drawing of Maud Allan, we do not know, and we can find no trace of it. It is possible that he saw an illustration by Norman Morrow, who was certainly in London at the time Maud Allan was performing and in the world of the theatre, but the painting is very true to the many photographs of Maud Allan in her Salome costume, a copy of which we will be including with the painting.

PLEASE SEE LAST IMAGE (BLACK & WHITE PHOTO)

Norman Morrow was an Irish cartoonist and topical illustrator, who was born in Belfast on 21st August 1879. He was educated at the Govenment School of Art in Belfast and four of his seven brothers were also cartoonists. He exhibited with the Belfast Art Society in 1903/4 and then moved to London, where he obtained employment producing drawings for The Graphic and The Bystander and painting stage sets for the Chelsea Arts Theatre. He lived in Chelsea for the rest of his life and died there on 8th September 1917 at the young age of 38.
