Rare Michael Cardew Winchcombe Studio Pottery Lamp
Created whilst at the celebrated Winchcombe Pottery in the Cotswolds and dating to the late 1920's - early 1930's is this charming and somewhat scarce oil lamp, hand-thrown from the locally-sourced red clay.
The piece features applied twin handles to the upper section and a beautiful, floral brush-painted design in dark manganese over a gleaming ochre-honey coloured slip glaze. It comes complete with the original/period metal screw-in burner fitting.
The base with deep and crisply impressed marks for both the potter and pottery, as shown.
Michael Ambrose Cardew MBE CBE (1901 - 1983) worked at Winchcombe Pottery from around 1926 - 1939. He was a man with a vision and, through an extraordinary creative skill and force, he sought to breath new life into the then 'Greet Pottery', making a range of wares in the 17th century slipware tradition, that were both beautiful and accessible to those on modest incomes.
His work is now strongly collected and is held both in significant private and public collections globally.
Michael Cardew is one of our favourite potters, having sold several excellent examples of his work over the years. This lamp base represents a very good and early example of his work and is a worthy addition to any early Winchcombe or studio pottery collection.

Condition In close to perfect order. The only real faults, if they can be deemed as such, are those arising from the manufacturing / firing process. There are several large 'scorch' marks to the side of the pot. These have arisen from where the pot stood close to other pots in the kiln, or from the eruptions of heat during the wood firing process (sometimes called 'ash flashings'). The banded glaze design to one of the handles has also 'toasted' in one area. These issues are absolutely consistent with early and often unpredictable firings at Winchcombe, where the process was constantly being refined and altered.
